surfsKaiter was born from a simple desire: a mother wanting to share an activity and connect with her son.
Kai is a non-verbal autistic child whose journey inspired everything we do. Like many families, we were searching for meaningful ways to connect, move together, and create moments of joy. What began as time spent on a board soon revealed something much deeper.
Through adaptive surfskating, we observed increased confidence, engagement, body awareness, self-expression, and participation. These experiences led us to explore how visual instruction, movement sequencing, proprioceptive input, and sensory-aware design could make movement learning more accessible to a wider range of learners.
Those discoveries became the foundation of surfsKaiter.
Our mission is to create opportunities for connection, confidence, and inclusion by providing a welcoming environment where participants can explore movement at their own pace. Through adaptive surfskating, we bring families together, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging through shared experiences.
We believe every individual deserves opportunities to move, play, learn, and belong. We recognize that success looks different for every participant. For some, it may be standing on a board for the first time. For others, it may be learning a new skill, developing greater independence, improving body awareness, or simply sharing a meaningful experience with family and friends.
The heart of surfsKaiter is connection—connection through movement, connection with family, and connection with a community that celebrates every achievement, no matter how big or small.
What started with Kai also inspired a larger question:
How many individuals are excluded from movement opportunities not because they lack ability, but because those opportunities were never designed for the way they learn, communicate, regulate, and experience the world?
That question continues to guide our work.
To help keep our adaptive surfskate program accessible, we offer merchandise and accept community support. Every purchase and contribution helps provide equipment, safety gear, educational resources, and opportunities for participants and their families.
What started with one child continues to grow through every rider, family, volunteer, and supporter who joins us on this journey.
Together, we’re building confidence, connection, and community—one ride at a time.
